Key Stuck In Ignition?

Most motorists appreciate the ability to drive to where they want to go. This is a luxury because in actuality, you don’t necessarily have to drive in order to get where you need to go. However, driving comes with a couple of drawbacks every now and then. The drawbacks aren’t significant enough avoid driving.

Even when you car key looks ok, it may not be. It could be slightly bent but you may not notice it until its too late. Some keys have been improperly cut and it is just a matter of time before the key is stuck inside the ignition. None of these types of things are isolated incidents. Here are some practical steps that you can take when you’re experiencing trouble turning your keys in the ignition or getting your key out of the ignition.

When in the ON position

  • Loosen up the key by gently wiggling it. Don’t use too much force because you could end up breaking off the end of the key in the ignition.
  • Check the dashboard to make sure that the gear is in the correct position. It should be in the park position not the drive position. If it is in the drive position then the key will not release.
  • Pay close attention to how the key enters the ignition. If you are having trouble with the key going into the ignition, don’t force it; call a locksmith to help you determine why you are experiencing this problem.

When in OFF position

  • Check the position of the key. If you have an older key cylinder this could cause your keys to go into the ignition incorrectly. The position that you put your key into ignition can affect whether it will get stuck or not. If it isn’t easily going into the ignition, don’t force it.
  • Loosening up the key so that it will gently slide out will prevent any damages to your ignition.
  • Check your cars battery. If the battery is dead then it will not enable you to get the key out of the ignition. We know that this may sound silly but it is a problem that our locksmiths often find is the reason why a key will not turn inside the ignition.
